New Year, New YOU

It's that time of year. We ran through all things Christmas. Dealt with the crazy and the chaos that usually makes Christmas fly by and well, this one was no different. Then we finally watched a pretty color changing ball fall and hit its' place of rest to ring in the new year. 2024! Now we are in the downward spiral of what many people consider the post-Christmas blues. The weather for many is cold, minimal sun, and is dreary. We are on such a high with all things Christmas like food, parties, family gatherings, opening presents and running around trying to get your hands on the newest and greatest. And then it just dies. No more luscious food, parties, presents etc. It is literally you and the daily grind. So, many get sad.

However, let me put this perspective out there. If you are an avid reader and love the solitude that a book brings forth, these months can be VERY vibrant and full of adventure. I mean, what is better than getting cozy on the couch on cold winter Saturday and just reading? These next months do not have to be seen in a negative way. I think society fills our minds with how we should react and be. Like the only way to be able to get up in the morning and be a parent is to have a cup of coffee. So many memes and the like on that topic. Sure, the lack of Vitamin D can cause winter blues and yes that is a real thing, at least up in Alaska where they experience 24 hours of darkness. But, for us not in that situation, it is a beautiful time and quiet time for most. Unless you are a mom of a competitive cheerleader and competitive gymnast, like I am and are traveling all over the place for meets and competitions. I digress. How about we change our thought about these wintry months?

How would one do that? For one, find something joyful in your day. Second, see the beauty in the landscape, the peacefulness and the childlike awe that one can achieve with a new snowfall. Next, do a book challenge! How many books can you read in these next 3 months. Or, what better time to join a new group than now? Join a local book club, or simply start one with your friends if there are none in your area. Yes, resolutions are great, but many fall to the wayside. However, being in a book club allows for fun to come full force, especially if you have a great group! Added bonus, it can be an indoor or outdoor activity, and if needed, we have technology such as Zoom to participate if we cannot make it in person.

So, to get those winter blues stored away and locked up, get out there! Join that book club, or simply create one with a group of friends. Be productive during these cold days and remain positive, as sunnier days lay ahead. Figuratively and relatively speaking, as when you decide to see the positive in anything, the sun comes out. Happy reading my fellow book lovers!
